Public lectures at the Faith Mission Bible College (FMBC)
On Monday 29th September we begin a series of talks from the book of II Corinthians. The speaker, Robert Murdock, is the Principal of the FMBC. He has served as the minister of two Churches, one in the UK and the other in Canada. Robert is excited about having the opportunity to journey through II Corinthians in these evening lectures. The Church at Corinth stood at the crossroads of the ancient world and faced the same kind of challenges that Churches in the 21st-century in Edinburgh face. This letter is bursting at the seams with lessons for us to discover, learn and apply to each of our lives and church fellowships. 2 Corinthians does not enjoy the popularity among Christians that it deserves. The letter contains Paul’s most comprehensive statement in the New Testament concerning the death of Christ (5:14-21). It extols the superiority of the new covenant over the old that is paralleled only by the book of Hebrews. It brings to light the struggles in ministry in a way that no other book does. It is a letter which is full of passion and pathos as Paul defends himself and his ministry against his critics that were seeking to destabilize the Church. In short, this is a study worth being part of. Come and join us each Monday evening from 7.30-9.00 pm. On at least four of the ten evenings, men with experience in the area of study will bring a focused and practical treatment of the subject in the second lecture.
School of the Bible lectures starts at 7.30pm, with a break for tea/coffee. There is no charge for these events.
South East Edinburgh Churches Acting Together (SEECAT) are holding an event called Focus on the work of the charity ‘500 Miles’ with the speaker Olivia Giles. The event will be held on Wednesday 24th September at 7pm at the Tron Kirk, Craigour Gardens. There will be refreshments, tombola and a Traidcraft stall. Tickets are £1 from Irene Hoy or pay at the door.
Olivia Giles has an inspiring story to tell, she was working as a lawyer in 2002 when she caught meningococcal septicaemia and had to have her hands and feet amputated to save her life. In 2007 she founded the charity 500 miles, which supplies prosthetic limbs to developing countries.
Two hustings concerning the Referendum on Scottish Independence have been organised by SEECAT (South East Edinburgh Churches Acting Together).
The first titled, Scotland in the World, will take place on Tuesday 24th June at 7.30pm in Liberton Northfield Church and features Gavin Brown MSP and Fiona Hyslop MSP.
Gavin Brown is a Lothian’s MSP and Conservative Spokesperson for Finance and will represent the Better Together Campaign. Fiona Hyslop is MSP for Linlithgow and Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs and will represent the Yes Campaign. There will be opportunity to hear from both speakers and plenty of time for questions from the audience. Please invite your friends and neighbours along.
The Guild is a movement within the Church of Scotland that invites men and women to commit their lives to Jesus Christ and enables them to express their faith in Worship, Prayer and Action.
Our meetings are held every second Wednesday and start at 2pm. At the end of each meeting, tea and biscuits are served at 3pm. If you would like to attend any of the meetings, we would love to see you there and you are assured of a very warm welcome by our members.
